Setting Up Your Email Account

Things you'll need to know or choose

Your name

Real name (who your really are), example: Lloyd T. Lobster
Email name (your screen name), example: lobster

Your password

Choose something that you can remember, but not something that could be easily guessed. You may want to add some numbers or symbols to a word that means something to you.

Keep your password private.

Information about your ISP

SMTP Server = Where your mail is stored, example: mail.ocean.net
Pop Server = Where you place outgoing mail, example: mail.ocean.net

This information is provided to your by your ISP. If your ISP doesn't offer a program that automatically sets up your Internet information, you might need to enter this information yourself.

Sometimes, the SMTP Server and POP Server have the same address and sometimes they don't. It all depends on how your ISP uses the same machine to store and send email, or 1 machine to store and another machine to send email.

Your IP address

Some email programs will prompt for your IP address.

An IP address is a unique address given to every computer on the Internet.

This address is provided by your ISP. There are two types of addresses:

A Static address is a unique address that is always assigned to your computer.
A Dynamic address is assigned to your computer each time it connects to the ISP, which means your address will be different each time you connect to the Internet.

IP addresses look like this:

255.255.255.255

Creating multiple accounts

You can create multiple email accounts on the same computer so more than one person can use the same computer to check their email.

To do this via Eudora, you need to create duplicate SETTINGS files by actually copying the files. This may be difficult to do without documentation.

If you are not sure how to do it on your email software, here are two ways you can use the same computer to check multiple email accounts:

Download multiple email programs on the same computer, and set each one up as a different person's account.
Change the account information each time you want to check your email. This is extra work and not the most efficient way, but if you don't have documentation or access to someone who can help you set up multiple accounts, it might be the only way you have.
